Thanks to some deadlines, determination, and a great group of artists and organizers, I will finally be exhibiting some newly completed paintings at the Terrace Art Gallery for the month of June. Once again, Matthew Daratha has organized a fantastic group art show with many of Terrace's talented artists. Come out Friday May 31st at 7pm for an opening night with music, food, and artists on site. The set up is looking really good already and there are paintings, sculptures, drawings, poetry and more. Check out the show poster at the Exhibition Record page. I will write more about my ideas behind these two paintings later, but I had fun incorporating gold acrylic paint and gold spray paint into each of these works. An old lace shirt was sacrificed for the making of these paintings, but I have a feeling it will be used again as I really like the effect it creates when used as a spray stencil.

I like lamps a little, so I doodled a bouquet of them. Pencil crayon and ink on paper. May make this into a large version one day, possibly in paint!
If you are in the Terrace area, make sure you go check out the amazing art show at the Terrace Art Gallery put on by artist and colleague Marc Eliuk and the talented students at Studio 115 from Caledonia Secondary School. The show holds a wide variety of styles, media, and themes. All artwork was created within this school year. It is sure to impress!
What a good looking couple! I was honoured to be commissioned to paint a Paris scene by Evan for his lovely girlfriend Emily's birthday present this April. I had worked on it for a few months before hand and couldn't post pictures so I am happy to post a few, now that I can do so without ruining any surprises:) Evan had to ship it across seas to Emily in far off (and hot!!) Australia where she lives, so it had to be completed early. The two met on a tour of Europe, during which they got to visit the city of love as part of their experience. Those lucky ducks! Thanks to everyone who helped me with advice, moral support, and positive reinforcement. This was a bit of a challenge as I haven't been to Paris before and I didn't want to just paint the Eiffel Tower, though I HAD to include it off in the distance. It was also a challenge because I actually had to spend time on detail when usually I am an impatient artist who likes to work a bit more abstractly. Also, I wanted Evan and Emmy to be happy with the result. What a good challenge, though! I edited a photo of the painting in Photoshop so I could see it in black and white, and I like the result. I'm not sure which I like better now, since the blue is sort of monochromatic as it is. Either way, it was a fun project! Happy Birthday Emmy!
This week one of my best friends moved into a new beautiful home with her now fiancéeeee, which was really really exciting! Their house is beautiful and big! So, clearly housewarming gifts equals craft time!! Janet and I silkscreened trees onto tea towels and fabric napkins and we think they are AWESOME so I am sharing these fancy photos of them with you. We printed mostly with black textile ink and experimented with red ink on a white centrepiece and a black tea towel which created different effects. The red on black created a sort of burnt orange look, and the red on white turned out much brighter. We only had a few minor setbacks which involved nervously washing out screens and a poorly-printed napkins but all turned out successfully in the end. Let's hope Melia and Jake like having people over for dinner! ;)
Two of my favourite paintings, The Perch I and The Perch II have been for sale previously at Mountainside Gallery and Framing for $150.00 each, but I'd like to offer a price reduction on The Perch I as I recently noticed a small scratch in the paint. If anyone is in the market for a new painting for their walls I am offering to sell The Perch I for $130.00 and The Perch II for its most recent price of $150.00 or the both for $275. Both canvases are on 2" thick stretchers, so no need for framing if you don't want. These were so much fun to create! I tried many new techniques with these, including printing with linocuts on tissue paper and applying to the canvas, using texture in the form of drywall filler, and using vegetable oil as a paint resist. I can't decide if I like them better together or apart! They have a semi-mirroring paint splatter that matches up if you hang them a couple of inches off, but they look great on their own too. I hope to one day paint more with a similar textured feel. Does anyone recognize the lamp posts from a certain place in Victoria? Often birds perch up on there to get a good look over the area. Stay tuned for more deals coming soon! I'm making room for new artworks this year! Got any ideas, suggestions, or commissions? Let me know!
I don't understand how someone could screw the top back on WITHOUT lining up the circles to match the original design...doesn't that just bother the OCD in everyone? For me, it does. Unacceptable. Simply unacceptable. However, this is my first piece of "public art," so, isn't it fun to see what happens to it and how it evolves over time? :D (PS - I'm not actually upset.) Happy Family Day! I hope you all got to talk to or see your loved ones today, even if you are not in BC and celebrating our new holiday. I got to skype my family today so I'm very happy about that! I miss them all the time. I finally finished those drawing-doodles! Droodles. All 21 of them. I can't post pictures since I haven't delivered them yet, but with permission I may post a few for fun in the next week. It feels good to have that project done. The next ones up include a commissioned painting I have to begin and complete this month and some album artwork that should also be done sometime soon for an awesome local band called Playback. Oh, and that collaborative work in oil needs some attention, too. :) Well the next 'holiday' up is Valentine's Day, coming up this Thursday. I hope none of you are being Negative Nancy's or Norman's about it. I like to believe its about celebrating ALL kinds of love and not just romance. Think of that this Thursday please if you're feeling like a Debbie Downer. And if you can't WAIT until the 14th, that's the spirit! That is all. Have a great week! <3
Well, January is almost over and I haven't posted much since I said I would do more of that in the new year. Soon after I read my goals post for 2013 I watched a TED talk video telling me I shouldn't announce my goals because announcing them makes you feel like you've actually accomplished part of those goals already. I think there is some truth in that! I have been working on many different art projects lately, however none of them seem to be completed yet, so I haven't posted anything. The image above is a sneak preview of the sketches I've been working on for the wonderful kids in the grade 3 class I taught for a couple months in the fall. These are taking me way longer than expected because I am trying to make them all unique and detailed instead of the initial "sketch" idea I was going for. Oh well, its fun! Other projects include a couple of acrylic paintings on board, some album art for a local band, a collaborative painting with a colleague, and some jewelry making! Also, I get to teach Photography again at the high school starting next week as well as this new exciting course which is a 2-in-1 deal called Computer Animation and Web Design! How cool is that! I'm so excited. I'm also excited because the more busy I am the more art I seem to do, so this is good for me work AND art-wise. Hope you all had a great January! Music and art go together hand in hand, so why not paint your musical instruments? My brass trumpet might be a difficult surface to paint, but my friend Jen's ukulele was perfect! Zombie's aren't really my thing, but Jen wanted a zombie unicorn on her ukulele and this is what she got! (I have a lot of time in the summers when I am off work...) I painted right on the surface of the wood without using a primer or removing the strings, however with a different design the string removal may be necessary. Later I sprayed it with a clear gloss sealer. I added a fun background for the photo so it's more BAM!
